Another day, another record for Tri-Rail.
The commuter train carried 16,319 passengers Monday, the second highest ridership day in the system's 19-year history. That number has been eclipsed only by the 18,452 people who rode the train on June 23, 2006, when the Miami Heat celebrated its NBA championship in downtown Miami.
Tri-Rail officials attribute a large part of recent ridership growth to membership in its employer discount program. In May, 55 new employers and 861 new employees joined the program, which lets members take unlimited rides on the train for $60 a month, about the same as the cost to fill most cars with gasoline these days.
