Pietrus Saga, Daequan Cook, Posada, Wagner, Vick and Penn State
Preseason football is nearing its end, which means that the regular season is upon us. Last night the Bengals played the Falcons on Monday Night Football, which gave me my first look at Joey Harrington in red-and-black. Personally, I think some good could come of this Michael Vick scandal, if Harrington blossoms in Petrino’s offense. It’s certainly not out of the question, because Joey looked pretty good in the first half of last night’s game.
Pietrus Still Wanted in South Beach: The Miami Heat tried again last week to put together a good enough deal to land Warriors’ small forward Mickael Pietrus, but Golden State refused the offer. Sources have confirmed that the Heat are still trying to make a play for Pietrus, but no confirmation has been made as to whether Chris Mullin is still listening to what Miami is saying. The Heat have been trying to add Pietrus to their roster for quite some time, and with James Posey in Boston adding a player of Mickael’s skill set is vital to their season.
Daequan the Next Ray: I can’t tell you why, but Miami is getting a lot of attention in today’s Scoop. Heat rookie Daequan Cook had a decent showing during the Summer League, but critics claim he needs to work on his defense, footwork and balance on his shot. However, many people feel that he’ll make a substantial impact during his rookie season. Daequan Cook, for some egotistical reason, likens his game to Boston’s Ray Allen. He also seems to think there’s no reason to believe why he won’t be as good as Allen. I think Daequan Cook might me getting a little ahead of himself, or maybe another Daequan Cook (Dane) has been feeding him jokes.
Posada Expanding: Yankees’ catcher Jorge Posada might be heading into free agency this winter, but if his recent building projects are any indication – he’ll be in New York next spring. Posada, and his wife Laura, have expanded their New York home after buying a $3.6 million apartment that became available next to their current four-bedroom condo on the Upper East Side. That’s good news for Yankee fans, who can’t bear to lose Posada after Bernie Williams was pretty much forced into retirement by the Bombers last season.
Wagner Ready to Return: Mets’ closer Billy Wagner appears to be ready to pitch after taking a short break this weekend. Wagner claimed he hit a ‘dead arm’ period just a few days ago after blowing a save chance for the NL East-leading Mets. That was great news for New York, who is playing both Philadelphia and Atlanta this week (their two division rivals). Unfortunately for Met fans Wagner didn’t get a chance to pitch last night as the Phillies dominated, winning 9-2. Tonight New York will try to ride Tom Glavine to a win before their lead shrinks any further as the regular season winds down.
Vick Apologizes: Michael Vick apologized to the NFL and his Atlanta teammates for “using bad judgment and making bad decisions” and vowed to redeem himself. Shortly before making those comments, his first public statements since the allegations surfaced, Vick pleaded guilty to the federal dogfighting charges. I’m not quite sure how he’s going to redeem himself, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next few years. Personally, I think he should be a large donation to an animal charity, and begin to serve his term as soon as possible. He’ll be sentenced December 10th, so we still have over three months until the future is determined.
Paterno isn’t That Old Fashioned: For those of you who feel Penn State head coach Joe Paterno is old fashioned: take notice. The team is training their new quarterbacks using a PlayStation 3 and EA Sports’ Madden football. I doubt any of their players will be late to practice this season, I know I wouldn’t miss out on any extra video gaming time. It might seem a little stupid, but I’d imagine this might help Penn State recruit some players in the coming years if they know they can study the offense on PlayStation 3, and not in a thick playbook. Heck, maybe Joe can even settle some position battles over a nice game of Madden…
The Video of the Day: WMMR in Philadelphia has, without a doubt, the funniest morning show in the history of radio. Check them out, Preston & Steve, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. every weekday. They play pretty good music as well, here’s a cool farce they run from time to time.
