Bibby headed to Miami Heat, Murphy to Boston Celtics

Even after the NBA's trade deadline, championship contenders were not content.

The Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics and Miami Heat did more tinkering with rosters, adding players made available after in buyouts.
Forward Troy Murphy, traded from the New Jersey Nets to the Golden State Warriors last week, plans to sign with the Celtics once he clears waivers today after getting a buyout.
Point guard Mike Bibby gave up $6.2 million in 2011-12 salary to flee the Washington Wizards after the Atlanta Hawks traded him Thursday. He will sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers.
The teams hope to strengthen their hold on the top seeds over the Chicago Bulls, who finally have Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah playing together. Two games separate the Celtics (43-15) Heat (43-17) and Bulls (41-17) atop the East.
"Anytime you get to add a veteran ... who's had playoff experience, who's been in big games before, you can't shy away from that," Heat forward LeBron James told news reporters of Bibby.
The Heat have struggled at times with their point guard production. To make room for Bibby on the Heat's 15-man roster, Miami waived backup point guard Carlos Arroyo Tuesday.
"This was a very difficult decision to make because Carlos has done a great job for this team and this organization," Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. "He is truly a first class individual and professional. We wish him nothing but the best."
Going from a playoff team in the Hawks to a lottery team in the Wizards at Thursday's trade deadline was not an ideal situation for Bibby.
Miami acquires a veteran point guard with playoff experience — 80 games, more than any other Heat player — who can run the offense without dominating the ball and get players into their desired offensive spots. Bibby also will take some ballhandling duties off James and guard Dwyane Wade.
"It gives me an opportunity to play off the ball and be a little more comfortable and play the position I know I can play full time," James said.
The Celtics have room on their roster to add Murphy without releasing a player, after the trades Celtics made last week: sending center Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder for forward Jeff Green and center Nenad Krstic and sending rookie big men Luke Harangody and Semih Erden to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a draft pick.
The Heat and Celtics both were in the mix for Murphy even though his season has been marked by injury, unhappiness and low production with the Nets. But he has a chance to salvage it with the Celtics as a good rebounder and outside shooter, a role retired forward Rasheed Wallace once played for the Celtics.
This season, Murphy, who hasn't played since Jan. 7, averaged 3.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 18 games with the Nets. The Celtics are hoping for the player who averaged 14.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and shot 38.4% on three-pointers last season with the Indiana Pacers.
